چکیده

I. The basic example A0 (Figure 1). A regular normed projection of our basic example of a mildly wild non-Wilder arc is shown in Figure 1. (Using the methods of [4], one could easily give a precise description.) (A) Ao is not L.P.U. at p. The invariants of [7] will be used to show that the penetration index PiA0, p) of A0 at p is equal to 4. (For a definition of the penetration index see [l] and [2].) The fundamental group iriiUi— Ao) of the complement of A0 in the 3-cell neighborhood Ui of p is generated by elements an, bn, cn, d, ^n, fn, gn, hn (»^ 0) indicated in the usual way in Figure 1. A set of defining relations is

Uncountably many bounded positive solutions for a second order nonlinear neutral delay partial difference equation

In this paper we consider the second order nonlinear neutral delay partial difference equation $Delta_nDelta_mbig(x_{m,n}+a_{m,n}x_{m-k,n-l}big)+ fbig(m,n,x_{m-tau,n-sigma}big)=b_{m,n}, mgeq m_{0},, ngeq n_{0}.$Under suitable conditions, by making use of the Banach fixed point theorem, we show the existence of uncountably many bounded positive solutions for the above partial difference equation...

Uncountably Many Arcs in S Whose Complements Have Non-isomorphic, Indecomposable Fundamental Groups

An uncountable collection of arcs in S is constructed, each member of which is wild precisely at its endpoints, such that the fundamental groups of their complements are non-trivial, pairwise non-isomorphic, and indecomposable with respect to free products. The fundamental group of the complement of a certain Fox-Artin arc is also shown to be indecomposable.

Examples of non-rigid CAT(0) groupsfrom the category of knot groups

C Croke and B Kleiner have constructed an example of a CAT(0) group with more than one visual boundary. J Wilson has proven that this same group has uncountably many distinct boundaries. In this article we prove that the knot group of any connected sum of two non-trivial torus knots also has uncountably many distinct CAT(0) boundaries.

Learning Finitely Additive Probabilities: an Impossibility Theorem

If (X,X ) is a measure space and F◦ ⊂ X is a field generated either by a countable class of sets or by a Vapnik-Červonenkis class, then if μ is purely finitely additive, there exist uncountably many μ′ agreeing with μ on F◦ and having |μ(A) − μ′(A)| = 1 for uncountably many A. If μ is also non-atomic, then for any r ∈ (0, 1], |μ(Ar)− μ(Ar)| = r for uncountably many Ar. Al-Najjar’s [1] unlearnab...

On Groups with Uncountably Many Subgroups of Finite Index

Let K be the kernel of an epimorphism χ : G → Z, for G a finitely presented group. If K has uncountably many normal subgroups of finite index r, then K has uncountably many subgroups (not necessarily normal) of any finite index greater than r. In particular, this is the case whenever G is subgroup separable and K is nonfinitely generated. Assume that G has an abelian HNN base contained in K. If...
